We invite you to join two key project events: our mid-term event, organised with 6 other H2020 projects working around the topics of energy efficiency in SMEs, during the EU Sustainable Energy Days, on October 19 – see more information in this newsletter.
Our final event will be organised during the World Sustainable Energy Days in Wels, Austria, beginning of March. This event will be a great opportunity to meet many energy stakeholders at the policy conference and energy fair. A draft agenda and more information can also be found here below.

TOOLS AND PLATFORMS
Industry Informative Network
The IIN was created to increase stakeholder exchange, fostering the link between various market stakeholders and bridging the gap between demand and supply. It comprises three sections: a community of practitioners for discussion, a library and a technical repository to bridge the gap between market supply and demand – the catalogue of innovations. The platform will be populated over time with manuals, brochures, technical notebooks and other available information on legislative and technical developments for the cold supply chains in the food and beverage sector and invites stakeholders to contribute. By using the information available, users can discover how energy efficient their operations are, find out how to reduce energy consumption, and gain knowledge and awareness through training and education packages. https://iin-iccee.eu.
ICCEE tools are online!
The 6 ICCEE tools allow users to add their own data and sector characteristics, to carry out benchmarking and what-if analyses to reduce uncertainties and risks, evaluate the cost-benefits of energy efficiency measures across the supply chain through an holistic approach, prioritize measures to improve the economic and energy performance of the whole supply chain, assess non-energy benefits, such as enhanced competitiveness, reduced maintenance, improved working environment, and finally be informed about existing funding opportunities for energy efficiency measures. Tutorial videos are provided to navigate the users through the tools and allow them to upgrade their skills.
The 6 tools, available on the project website, are:
- The cold supply chain tool (CSC), for the analysis of the chain energy consumption and prevention of food quality losses
- The life cycle assessment tool (LCA), to understand the environmental impact of the cold supply chain
- The life cycle costing tool (LCC), a holistic approach for energy efficiency measures in cold chains from the economic perspective
- The tool “benchmarking non-energy benefits” focuses on the other factors relevant to decision making on the cold supply chain energy performance (allowing to compare with peers)
- The non-energy benefit evaluator (NEB) helps analyze and assess the non-energy benefits of specific energy efficiency measures
- Finally, the multi-criteria analysis tool goes a step further than the CSC and LCA tools, a quantitative, yet simple, ranking method for the evaluation of scenarios within cold supply chains.
REPORTS, PAPERS and ARTICLES
Report on performance database
In the report, primary data obtained from the surveys filled by several companies in the cold chains of the food and beverage sector, and secondary data are analyzed to define a benchmarking database on both input data and key performance index (KPIs). Furthermore, the implementation rate of different energy efficiency measures is also investigated. The report provides insights on the F&B industry based on the data, followed with analyses of the storage, transportation activities and of the implementation rate of energy efficiency measures. The report concludes with policy recommendations for EU and national levels. Primary data have been directly collected through interviews from suppliers, retailers, producers and must be stored in specific archives to ensure long-term accessibility. Report with main findings and conclusions regarding training activities and courses
One of the main activities of ICCEE was to create a capacity building program and a community dedicated to support the change in the energy culture of the organizations improving their energy performance through various activities. The capacity building program consists of direct trainings, workshops and seminars with external experts as well as the development of an e-learning concept. Through all these activities, ICCEE allowed to increase stakeholders’ awareness and knowledge on the energy and environmental issues leading to changes in habits and behaviour. This document describes the activities which enhanced corporate policy towards energy efficiency, energy culture (motivations, behaviour change, mitigation of perceived risks and barriers) and sustainable supply-chain initiatives. At the end of each training, a final test was submitted to the participants to evaluate the skills acquired during the training session. OCTOBER 19- Towards a decarbonized Europe: Increasing energy efficiency in SMEs for a clean energy transition
The project mid-term event, October 19 at 9am CET (until 10.30), builds on the results of 7 EU-funded projects: DEESME, E2DRIVER, INNOVEAS, SMEmPOWER, SPEEDIER, ICCEE and Triple-A, and is part of the European Sustainable Energy Week extended programme. It will provide guidelines and good practices to implement energy efficiency solutions, focusing on the challenges, opportunities, new forms of actions and regulations to enhance the role of SMEs in energy transition. Industry stakeholders, policy makers, financial institutions, ESCOs, academia/research, energy professionals and other attendees will therefore hear about available services, tools and policies that can unlock considerable amounts of energy/cost savings and assist in achieving emission targets.
DATES ANNOUNCED SOON - EU workshops
8 interactive and digital EU workshops are now in the pipeline until end of 2021, to introduce stakeholders some of the tools developed to further support the industry on their path to sustainability and increased energy efficiency and allow them to put them to use. Each workshop will define in depth the three main energy efficiency measures resulting from the tools’ application, as well as the funding opportunities to finance them. They will also allow to focus on one subsector: beverage, dairy products, fish, frozen food, fruits and vegetables, meat, and HORECA.
MARCH 2-4, 2022 - Increasing cold chain energy efficiency in the European food and beverage sector
The project final conference will be organised during the World Sustainable Energy Days, in Wels, Austria, beginning of March 2022.
The aim of ICCEE is to bridge the inefficiencies in the cold supply chain stages, increasing the energy efficiency and the energy culture of food and beverage manufacturing industries, warehouses, cold storage and logistic operators. It has also enhanced the awareness towards energy efficiency and sustainable supply chain initiatives at every organisational level, from top management to operational staff. ICCEE methodology - led by a group of industry, energy and IT experts -has developed a series of interrelated activities, which include a tailor-made tool for cold supply chains, and training courses to increase the supply chain energy efficiency in the food and beverage sector and implement real energy efficiency measures and investments. Back in presence- ICCEE short edition of the training session on energy efficiency of the cold chain at CIBUS 2021
The training sessions on energy efficiency of the cold chain in the food sector continue. A short edition of the course - organized by Federalimentare in collaboration with FIRE and the University of Brescia - was held last September 2nd in Parma during CIBUS 2021.
The initiative "Energy efficiency in the cold chain: best practices and opportunities for the food and beverage industry", which took place in hybrid mode (both in presence at the pavilions of Fiere di Parma and in streaming), was a great success: the best practices to be adopted to improve energy efficiency in the logistics-production chain of cold in the food industry were shared, as well as opportunities for energy savings; in addition, ISO 50001, ENPIs, IMPVP, Life Cycle Cost, Life Cycle Analysis, non-energy benefits, Big Data and Data Science in the cold chain were discussed.
